Today we will travel to one of the country’s most spectacular regions: the Apuseni Mountains, situated in the western part of the Carpathian Mountains and go on a thrilling journey into the underworld. We will depart from Cluj at 9 A.M. from City Tours & Events office, Hermann Oberth street and drive to Scarisoara. The small village houses one of Romania’s most spectacular natural sites: a glacier situated inside of a million year old cave. The history of this monument goes back to the Ice Age and is one of the few glaciers that have survived in this part of the world. Both the hike to the cave and the viewing of the spectacular ice nature “sculptures” represent unique experiences.
We will then have the chance to enjoy a delicious lunch with local specialties and homemade palinca (plumb brandy) is an absolute must!
In the afternoon we will depart for the former miners village of Chitcau. Although both the marble and the gold mine have been shut down years ago, locals still sell different minerals at the side of the street, showing the formidable richness these mountains hide. In one of these mines, in 1975, a miner accidentally discovered a cavern where dozens of cave bear skeletons had been standing for millions of years. Both the remains of these animals, as well as the impressive limestone formations (stalactites and stalagmites) make this cave one of the region’s most famous monuments.
In the evening we will return to Cluj.
