Today’s journey is going to take us to one of Transylvania most unknown and beautiful parts: the Bistrita region. We will depart at 9 AM from City Tours & Events office in Hermann Oberth street and drive towards Bistriţa. It used to be one of Transylvania’s most important commercial centers and reminding of that is the Gothic situated on the main square. Built by German guilds and tradesmen in the 12th century, it has been the city’s symbol ever-since. A couple of years ago, parts of it including the tower were seriously affected by a dramatic fire and had to be rebuilt by the local community. Thanks to these huge efforts, we will be able to visit the tower and enjoy a splendid panorama over the whole city.
Departing from Bistrita, we will drive for a couple of kilometers to the village of Herina, where the old Romanesque church stands as a reminder of the German population who used to live here. Colonized between the 12th and the 15th century from Western Europe, they managed to protect these lands from the invading populations from the East and were forced to evacuate Northern Transylvania in September 1944. The Lutheran church is one of the last signs of their 800 years of civilization and is one of the few Romanesque churches in Romania that have survived the centuries…
At lunch we will arrive in Batos. The small village has always been home to some of the best wines in Transylvania and even after the great exodus of the German population during the Second World War, it remained an important wine center. A couple of years ago, a passionate Austrian wine lover bought most of the vineyards and is producing nowadays, under the Liliac brand, some of Romania’s best wines. We will get the chance to taste some of these wines, together with some great local dishes, all homemade and grown in the village.
In the evening we will return to Cluj.
