Capital of Modern Arts

Besides the century old history and traditions, the gothic churches, medieval walls and baroque palaces, the cities culture has been evolving in the past 20 years as one of Romania’s modern arts center. According to the Huffington Post “Cluj is one of the 12 cities, which will shake up the art world in the 21st Century”. The local arts & Design University has been starting point to dozens of young artists, such as Victor Man (Deutsche Bank’s Artist of the year) or Adrian Ghenie (famous for his galleries all over the world). We will get the chance to visit the headquarters of the University, situated in the oldest building in Cluj, the birth house of the great Hungarian king, Mathias Corvinus. We will then go to “the brush factory”, an old communist building, which has been turned into an interesting arts and exhibition center. Each week, lots of exhibitions and events take place here. One of the artists is going to give us a tour of the arts center and tell us more about the project.

Returning to the center of the city, we will visit the TIFF-café and get the chance to discover another cultural project: Tranylvania International Film Festival. Having reached its 13 edition, it has become one of the biggest cinema events in south-eastern Europe. We will get the chance, not only to enjoy a good cup of coffee, but also to find out more about this festival.

At the end of the tour you will be able to decide for yourself if Cluj has the potential to become 2021’s European Capital of Culture…
